In the latest release (11 December 2023), Apple introduced Journal, a new app that enables users to reflect on everyday moments and special events, fostering gratitude and enhancing overall well-being. With Journal, you can capture and document significant moments in your life, accompanied by photos, videos, audio recordings, locations, and more, creating a tapestry of cherished memories.
On-device machine learning provides personalized suggestions to inspire your journal entries, while customizable notifications assist in cultivating regular writing habits. Through the Journaling Suggestions API, third-party journaling apps can also suggest moments for you to write about, ensuring a personalized experience while prioritizing privacy. Journal, along with the Journaling Suggestions API, is now available with the release of iOS 17.2.

“We are excited to bring the benefits of journaling to more people,” said Bob Borchers, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “Journal makes it easy to preserve rich and powerful memories and practice gratitude by intelligently curating information that is personal to the user, right from their iPhone. And we’re making it possible for other journaling apps to offer the same personalized suggestions while maintaining the highest level of privacy.”
Getting started with Journal is effortless. You can begin by logging a simple text entry or enriching it with details such as photos, videos, locations, or audio recordings to provide more context. Furthermore, you can easily add content from other apps, such as news articles, music, or podcasts, to your Journal entries. Navigating through your past entries, bookmarking them, and filtering them based on specific details like photos, workouts, or places is seamless. Scheduled notifications can assist you in maintaining a consistent journaling practice.
The personalized suggestions and reflection prompts intelligently curated by Journal are designed to help you remember and write about significant moments in your life. These suggestions can include new places you’ve visited, photos you’ve taken, songs you’ve listened to, workouts you’ve completed, and more. Moreover, the writing prompts based on your activities empower you to gain meaningful insights, while the daily reflection prompts guide your focus toward gratitude, kindness, purpose, and other introspective themes. You have control over the type of content that appears in the suggestions and can create a journal entry using the suggestions of your choice.
Developers can also leverage the new Journaling Suggestions API to incorporate personalized journaling suggestions into their own apps. This allows users to receive prompts for moments to write about in a privacy-preserving manner, expanding the benefits of journaling to more individuals while maintaining the personalized and secure experience that only iPhone can deliver.
“The Journal app is an exciting development for us because it introduces the benefits of digital journaling to a wider audience and ushers in a new chapter for the practice,” said Paul Mayne, founder of the journaling app Day One. “We have integrated the Journaling Suggestions API into the Day One app to give our users an even richer experience that puts privacy at the forefront, and we can’t wait for them to try it.”
At its core, Journal prioritizes the privacy and security of your entries. When your iPhone is locked with a passcode, all entries in the Journal app are encrypted. Additionally, you have the option to enable secondary authentication and lock the Journal app with your device passcode, Face ID, or Touch ID. Rest assured, all Journal entries are end-to-end encrypted when stored in iCloud, ensuring that only you have access to them. The Journaling suggestions are generated on your device, and you have the freedom to choose which suggested moments are shared with the Journal app and added to your entries.
